Fourth Birthday Poem

                    for grandniece Sophia

I'm looking over a four-leaf clover
and a poppy on the cliffs of Dover.

A tetrahedron has four faces.
In baseball there are four bases.

Violin and cello have four strings
and a honeybee has four wings.

Four legs in a table and chair.
Four elements:
  water, earth, fire, air.

Four croquet balls—
  red, blue, yellow, & black.
Four elephants support Earth
  on a tortoise's back.

Four chambers pumping
  blood in your heart.
Four Seasons you'll find
  in music and art.

Every square has four sides.
Let the Four Books be your guides.

Four bases in spiral DNA.
Wishing you a
  Happy 4th Birthday!
