Fantasy: Balloons
Lifting Audrey Up

Audrey Hepburn with Balloons

Pinterest sends me two emails
daily on photos I may like—
football uniforms, sacred geometry,
cute animals, and girl with balloons.

I click on the latter
and it's Audrey Hepburn
in the film Funny Face
taken by Richard Avedon.

She's holding eight balloons
but there may be more—
a gust of wind may send her
aloft like in The Red Balloon.

That 35-minutes French film
was made in 1956, a year
before Funny Face
and got to see it again.

After Pascal finds the Red Balloon,
it follows him everywhere as though
it has a mind of its own, going
to school and even to church.

Older boys envious of the balloon,
tried to burst it with slingshots
and stomped it dead at last, but
so many balloons float to Pascal

carrying him aloft over Paris
where Funny Face was made—
I see balloons lifting Audrey
up, up, up, soaring into the sky.
