Gust of Wind: D.T. Suzuki

The wind at your back— thankful
for the Irish blessings, but
when it's blowing on your face,
wonderful recall of D.T. Suzuki

at age 87 in Mexico
attending Psychiatry Conference
discussing Buddha's 8-Fold Path,
but he's not participating.

Scholars elbowing each other
whispering "the old man's asleep".
Suddenly a gust of wind from
the window— papers flying

off the table, except Suzuki's—
his fist kept them still as the wind
blew in— Paul Brunton defines
yoga as skill in action.

The scholars were talking the talk,
only Suzuki walking the walk—
not asleep but awake
showing mindfulness.
