MY DREAM

by Sasha Gersten
3rd grade, Keys School, Palo Alto

A lion went
toward me
while I played
the guitar.
He got
closer and
closer
near me.
The moon
was full.
His
green
eyes
glowed like a
ball.
I was
afraid.
I stopped
playing
my guitar
The sky
got dark.
I was far away
from
home.

I was cold
I wrapped
myself
in my wool blanket.
The lion
roared again.
He jumped.
I shivered.
I thought
he
was
going
to eat me
but
he didn't.
His
fur glowed
in the moon
light air.
He walked
past me.
I
thought
he was a
nice lion.

Poet-teacher Peter Y. Chou handed out copies of Chinese and Western paintings to 3rd grade students of Keys School, Palo Alto. He read an imaginative poem of his, whereby he entered in and participated in a Bruegel's painting, The Hay Harvest. He then told students to fantasize themselves inside a painting and weave a story. © Remembering What Happened: CPITS 1991 Statewide Anthology.
