Preface: For Song #24, I've selected "Ol' Man River"
sang by Paul Robeson
from Show Boat (1936). The music was written by Jerome Kern and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, published in 1927. The song contrasts the struggles & hardships of African Americans with the endless, uncaring flow of the Mississippi River. It is sung from the point of view of a black stevedore on a showboat, and is the most famous song from the show. The 1936 rendition by Paul Robeson finished No. 24 in AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs 2004 survey of top tunes in American cinema. (Lyrics). Paul Robeson graduated from Rutgers University (1919) and Columbia Law School (1923). Harry Belafonte mentioned Paul Robeson as his moral compass when he began helping Martin Luther King Jr. in the Civil Rights Movement. |
