Preface: For Song #46, I've selected Elvis Presley singing
"One Night with You" (1956).
It was prompted by
Mercury News's article by Robert Lloyd's
A New Look at 'The Comeback'
(August 17, 2023, G7). Steve Binder's Reinventing
Elvis: The '68 Comeback
shows Elvis encased in thick black leather from head to toe, with close-up, capturing sweat
beading up on his brow beneath a shock of black hair. The 1968 NBC TV Special shows Elvis going
forward by going back to reclaim himself as "The King of Rock"
(Johnny Loftus, Decider, 8-16-2023).
The song was written by Dave Bartholomew, Pearl King, & Anita Steinman. It originally was an R&B hit for Smiley Lewis in 1956, before being recorded with greater commercial success by Elvis Presley in 1957. It was issued as a single in October 1958 and peaked at No. 4 on Billboard's singles chart. Presley's recording was issued as a double A-side with "I Got Stung", and reached number one twice on the UK Singles Chart. On 12 February 1959, it became the first song to reach No. 1 on the Irish Music Charts Top 10. Elvis singing "One Night" (1957). Lyrics. |
One night with you Is what I'm now praying for The things that we two could plan Would make my dreams come true Just call my name And I'll be right by your side I want your sweet helping hands My loves too strong to hide Always lived A very quiet life I ain't never did no wrong Now I know That life without you Has been too lonely too long |
