Judy Singing Wizard of Oz (1939) |
Rainbow |
Judy (Paris, 1961) |
Preface: After Song #6, Tony Bennett singing
"I Left My Heart in San Francisco",
there was a segment showing Tony and Judy Garland singing this song together
(1963). Recall reading that Judy attended a Tony Bennett show, and when he saw her in the audience, he got her up on the stage, and perform her songs. So the audience who came to listen to Tony Bennett got to hear Judy Garland instead. It's a wonderful story showing that one can put his ego behind to promote a friend. For Song #7, found Judy Garland performing her signature song "Over the Rainbow" in "The Wizard of Oz" film (1939) at age 17, and at the Olympia in Paris (1960) 21 years later at age 38. This ballad was written by Harold Arlen with lyrics by Yip Harburg. |
Somewhere over the rainbow Way up high There's a land that I heard of Once in a lullaby Somewhere over the rainbow Skies are blue And the dreams that you dare to dream Really do come true Someday I'll wish upon a star And wake up where the clouds are far behind me Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me Somewhere over the rainbow Bluebirds fly Birds fly over the rainbow Why, then, oh, why can't I? If happy little bluebirds fly Beyond the rainbow Why, oh, why can't I? © Peter Y. Chou WisdomPortal.com May 13, 2023 |
