On Balance

Balance may mean a pair of scales—
an instrument used in making sales.
It's the midpoint of a meter stick
or cooking soup that's not too thick.
It's a tightrope walker on a wire
whose feat of courage we admire.
It's also beyond weights or measure,
true balance is a priceless treasure.
It's avoiding all kinds of distortion,
finding the right kind of proportion.
Thus seers, saints, and sages we extol
for they have all mastered self-control,
their heart and mind are in equipoise
abiding in silence amidst the noise.
Pythagoras wrote in his Golden Verses
"Know Thyself to know the universe."
To his students who wish true success,
his maxim was "Nothing in excess."
Confucius taught Doctrine of the Mean
how to be virtuous, kind, and serene.
Let us not be dispersed and divided,
know for sure we're heavenly guided.
Everything is truly one and not two—
let's develop a balanced point of view
in whatever we do and what we say,
walk on Buddha's path— the Middle Way.
The less our thoughts weigh and compare
the more our mind becomes wholly aware.
So let's live a life of moderation
for this is the path to liberation.
Then the Golden Gate we shall enter—
abiding in Peace— the Cosmic Center.
