Vin Scully: In Memoriam

Vin Scully at Dodger Stadium, August 22, 2010

Let's not mourn his passing at 94,
but celebrate his broadcasting
golden voice that inspired us.

His melodious voice was soothing to hear
despite heartbreaks of Brooklyn Dodgers
losing to New York Yankees in the 50s.

His 67 years with the Dodgers was longest
broadcaster with a single team in history;
youngest to broadcast World Series at 25.

Highlighted the heroics of Dodgers—
Jackie Robinson, Pee Wee Reese,
Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax.

He was a minimalist— being silent
at key sports moments, letting the
crowd's reaction doing talk-the-talk.

He remained silent for 38 seconds
after Koufax pitched a perfect game
& Gibson's homer won the World Series.

Scully made the call of "The Catch"
Joe Montana to Dwight Clark to beat
Cowboys— "a madhouse" amidst the noise.

All broadcasters hold Scully in awe—
"There was none like him in the past
or in the future"— and I agree!
