Worm Moon

Worm Moon in March

Worm Moon, Atmore, Alabama

Worm Moon, Edmonton, Canada

The March Full Moon
is the last of Winter with
Spring just two days away.

Native Americans call it
"Worm Moon" not because
earthworms are coming out

but beetle larvae worms
emerge from thawing
bark of trees at this time.

"Worm Moon" not mentioned
in Bruchac's children's book
13 Moons on a Turtle's Back

but third Moon is called
"Maple Sugar Moon" where
sap flows from Maple trees.

Buried underground—
it's cold and dark with
worms crawling all over me

but I'm not afraid—
for I am a sparkling
Moonshine Stone!
