Prophecy (engraving)
from Tomi Secundi Tractus (1620)
by Robert Fludd (1574-1637)
This scene may represent Elijah anointing Elisha or
perhaps Samuel anointing David. The horn of oil and
the Spirit in the shape of a dove, issuing from above,
represent the influx of divine grace on the candidate
through the mentor, or Initiator, who acts as a vehicle
of the cosmic force.
