Stanford Cubberley Oak: Haikus

Lesson from a California Live Oak

Preface: I pass by Cubberley Education Building nearly every day on my way to Stanford's Green Library. I've attended many interesting lectures and film showings at Cubberley Auditorium. In my rush, I've not noticed how majestic this California Live Oak is in front of the building. Its branches are spread wide spraying blessings like a fountain of cornucopia. It appears well balanced and full of abundance— the purpose of education— an endless source of learning for a lifetime. There's also a giant hole in the front of this tree probably the result of a cut-off limb from years ago. Usually many bikes are parked in front of the building, but on Sunday, September 28, 2008, no bikes or people were in front of Cubberley Building when I took these photos.

A well balanced California Live Oak

Passed this oak for years
and just saw its beauty—
O how lovely it is!

Are you talking to me?
Or are you chanting OM?
I stop and listen.

This Cyclops Oak teaches me to focus

This one-eyed Live Oak
is a Cyclops teaching me
to be one-minded.
