Inferno 2
Raphael, Dante
The time was the beginning of the morning;
the sun was rising now in fellowship
with the same stars that had escorted it
2.55 Lucevan li occhi suoi più che la stella;
e cominciommi a dir soave e piana,
con angelica voce, in sua favella:
Her eyes surpassed the splendor of the star's;
and she began to speak to me— so gently
and softly— with angelic voice. She said:
3.23 Quivi sospiri, pianti e alti guai
risonavan per l'aere sanza stelle,
per ch'io al cominciar ne lagrimai.
Here sighs and lamentations and loud cries
were echoing across the starless air,
so that, as soon as I set out, I wept.
7.98 Or discendiamo omai a maggior pieta;
già ogne stella cade che saliva
quand'io mi mossi, e 'l troppo star si vieta".
But now let us descend to greater sorrow,
for every star that rose when I first moved
is setting now; we cannot stay too long."
15.55 Ed elli a me: "Se tu segui tua stella,
non puoi fallire a glorioso porto,
se ben m'accorsi ne la vita bella;
And he to me: "If you pursue your star,
you cannot fail to reach a splendid harbor,
if in fair life, I judged you properly;
16.83 Però, se campi d'esti luoghi bui
e torni a riveder le belle stelle,
quando ti gioverà dicere "I' fui",
So, if you can escape these lands of darkness
and see the lovely stars on your return,
when you repeat with pleasure, 'I was there,'
e 'l mar no li era la veduta tronca.
who live below, had as his home, a cave
among white marbles, from which he could gaze
at stars and sea with unimpeded view.
22.12 n´ già con sì diversa cennamella
cavalier vidi muover n´ pedoni,
n´ nave a segno di terra o di stella.
but never yet have I seen horsemen or
seen infantry or ship that sails by signal
of land or star move to so strange a bugle!
26.23 perché non corra che virtù nol guidi;
that it not run where virtue does not guide;
so that, if my kind star or something better
has given me that gift, I not abuse it.
At night I now could see the other pole
and all its stars; the star of ours had fallen
and never rose above the plain of the ocean.
he first, I following— until I saw,
through a round opening, some of those things
of beauty Heaven bears. It was from there
that we emerged, to see— once more— the stars.
