Famous Americans in 1940
(Scott #859-893). The Famous Authors series were issued on January 29, 1940 (Irving, Cooper), February 5, 1940 (Emerson, Alcott), February 13, 1940 (Twain). The Famous Poets series were issued on February 16, 1940 (Longfellow, Whittier), February 20, 1940 (Lowell, Whitman), February 24, 1940 (Riley). A survey was conducted to see how many hits (web pages) each of these writers have on the Internet. The "full name" (in quotes) of each writer was typed in Google Search Engine (July 5, 2003, 5 am) and the number of "hits" noted below. The number of Emerson hits (185,000) ranked far above the other writers with the exception of Mark Twain (651,000) and Walt Whitman (229,000). A similar Google survey of 44 American writers was conducted on Emerson's birthday (May 25, 2003), showing that Emerson was 8th in popularity on the web.
