Preface: The above quote has inspired me since reading it at Cornell in November 1966. Whenever I encounter difficulties in biochemical research or writing, Nansen's quote reminds me not to give up, but march forward until the task is done. I learned that Nansen was a Norwegian explorer, scientist, diplomat, humanitarian and 1922 Nobel Peace Laureate. He was a champion skier and ice skater as a youngster. He made the first crossing of the Greenland interior in 1888, traversing the island on cross-country skis. Nansen set a record northern latitude of 86^o14' during his North Pole expedition of 1893-1896. In later years, Nansen devoted himself to the League of Nations. He was awarded the 1922 Nobel Peace Prize for aiding refugees & victims of World War I. This web page of postage stamps honoring Fridtjof Nansen shows my appreciation of a great human being.

2017 Scott's Standard Postage Stamps Catalogues Volumes 1-6 (Los Altos Library) were used to locate the stamps. The Fridtjof Nansen stamps shown below were all downloaded from the web using Google Images and eBay searches. Click on catalogue #s for image source of the stamp. Catalogue #s were not found for the souvenir sheets from Chad, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Mali, and Niger (issued 10-10-2011) in the 2017 Scott's Postage Stamps Catalogues. They may not be authorized government issues, so were not listed. Michel catalog #s used on three stamps. Some stamps were retouched in Adobe Photoshop for centering and perforations with black background added. Dates of issue were found in Scott's Catalogues and Scott's Catalogue #s.
