Sunday, April 2, 2017, 8:22-8:26 am KDFC 104.9 FM: Mark Denza conducts Emmanuel Chamber Orchestra with Hampstead Singers in Patrick Hadley's My Beloved Spake (1936); CD; (YouTube: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5); Host of Sacred Concert, Jeffrey Thomas tells story of Hadley (1899-1973): He was 18 when enlisted in the army in WW I, and was injured necessitating the below knee amputation of his right leg, and used a prosthetic wooden limb. During WW II, he was conductor & musical director of the Cambridge University Music Society When upset with the choir, he'd take out a pocket knife and stab his leg to shock them, as they didn't know his leg was wooden. |
