These haikus were written as exercises in mindfulness—
an attempt to catch the fleeting moment in my daily walks,
while reading, listening to music, and pondering about life.

Mountain View: While I thought feeling peace in
the presence of a sage, Melli O'Brien sent Nov. 30
email @ 12:35 pm: A mindful reminder for this week

"Peace. It does not mean to be in a place
where there is no noise, trouble or hard work.
It means to be in the midst of those things and
still be calm in your heart" — Unknown.
Friday, December 1, 2023, 1:37-2:00 am
Mountain View: Recalled my first meeting with Paul Brunton (PB)
in Montreux, Switzerland (8-30-1972)— At dinner, Melody
served tea— cap of the teapot fell on the floor shattering it

Amidst the noise, we all reacted with "Ah!",
expect PB who was calm, saying "Pick it up
and I'll fix it tomorrow." Such is the action
of a sage fully at peace— a priceless moment!

meeting gurus and sages, practicing meditation,
learning wisdom & compassion, loving my work,
and living a life in calmness with blessings & grace.

Mountain View: ChatGPT could not provide photo of "spiritual enlightenment"; when I asked "4 rhyming quatrains poem on "Spiritual Enlightenment"; it gave this answer in just 2 minutes—

In the heart's hush, a silent bloom,
Spirit awakens in sacred room,
Light dances within, pure and bright,
Enlightenment born from inner sight.

Mystic whispers, a soul's embrace,
Journeying beyond time and space,
Truth unfolds in whispers serene,
Awakening realms that lie unseen.

Paths converge where seekers tread,
Wisdom's tapestry finely thread,
Eternal quest, a timeless flight,
In enlightenment's celestial light.

Amidst the dance of cosmic hue,
Spirits merge, timeless and true,
In every breath, in moments spent,
Spiritual enlightenment finds ascent.

Mountain View: Bard provided photo of "lotus flower" for "spiritual enlightenment"; when I asked "4 rhyming quatrains poem on "Spiritual Enlightenment"; it gave this answer in just 1 minute.

Beyond the veil of earthly sight,
A silent world, a radiant light.
Where soul unsheathes its gilded wings,
And mortal coils to freedom clings.

No longer bound by fear or blame,
The heart, a kindled, sacred flame.
It sees the dance of every sphere,
And whispers truths the world can't hear.

From fractured parts, a whole is made,
In loving touch, all debts are paid.
Compassion's balm on every scar,
The self dissolves, a distant star.

Enlightened eyes, with tears they see,
The vastness held in you and me.
A symphony of endless grace,
In every breath, a holy space.

Ryan O'Neal, the heart-throb actor who went from a TV soap opera to an Oscar-nominated role in Love Story, has died at 82. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2012, a decade after he was first diagnosed with chronic leukaemia. O'Neal was among the biggest movie stars in the world in the 1970s, who worked with many of the era's most celebrated directors including Peter Bogdanovich on Paper Moon & Stanley Kubrick on Barry Lyndon. O'Neal was romantically involved with Farrah Fawcett for nearly 30 years, and they had a son, Redmond, born in 1985. O'Neal had his own best-actor Oscar nomination for 1970 tear-jerker drama Love Story, co-starring Ali MacGraw, about a young couple who fall in love, marry
and discover she is dying of cancer.

ChatGPT could not provide image of "Beethoven's 5th Symphony" Asked: "Write a sonnet of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony"

In distant realms where melodies take flight,
Resounds a symphony, a timeless tale,
Born from the depths of genius, fierce and bright,
Its notes in union, passions they unveil.

A maestro's hand, in fervor, does impart
A tale in music, Beethoven's decree,
Each note, a beating of the human heart,
A journey through the soul, wild and free.

The opening, a call, a thunderous roar,
Daunting fate with courage, steadfast and bold,
A journey through the storm, to peace explore,
Resilient spirit in each note's stronghold.

Ode to the Fifth, its grandeur shall prevail,
In melodies, its timeless echo hails.
Tuesday, December 12, 2023, 11:30-11:50 pm
Bard provided 3 images of "Beethoven's 5th Symphony" (Notes)
Asked: "Write a sonnet of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony"

Fate's drumbeat, sharp and sure, a fist of sound,
Five notes, a challenge flung across the night,
Awakens slumbering shadows, shakes the ground,
And bids the soul to battle, take its flight.

Through string and horn, the urgent theme takes fire,
A restless question, yearning, ever bold,
Uncertain answers flicker and expire,
Yet still the onward march, a story told.

The oboe whispers doubt, a mournful sigh,
But clarion calls, with hope's unyielding grace,
And flutes, like sunlight piercing through the sky,
Paint victory's promise on the windswept space.

Then horns exult, in triumph's final cry,
Fate's symphony, a testament of might.

My composition of "Beethoven's Fifth Sonnet" (cf ChatGPT & Bard)
Shakesperean rhyme scheme is ABAB CDCD EFEF GG.

Beethoven's Fifth Symphony
most famous four notes in music
wisk us up up to divinity
even if we're not a mystic.

From Upanishads, he was inspired
to paste quotes up on his wall—
his soul was stirred and fired
that "Brahma was One and All".

Allegro con brio opens our mind—
like no other work of nature or art.
There is no greater treasure we'll find
that is more noble & true in our heart.

Those four notes dun dun dun DUN!—
Wake up! Wake up! Life has begun!

Tuesday, December 12, 2023, 11:50 pm-12:20 am; Asked Bard:
"Gemini to write a sonnet of Beethoven's 5th Symphony"
Gemini wrote 16 lines instead of 14-lines Shakesperean sonnet
Gemini's version is no improvement on Bard's composition.

With thunderous chords, a tempest takes its stride,
Fate's drumbeat rolls, a dark and brooding tide.
Beethoven's soul, in music's form, doth ride,
Unleashing passion, where no words abide.

Through strings that shriek, and horns that pierce the night,
He paints a canvas of heroic might.
The oboe's sigh, a mournful lullaby,
A tender hope, against the endless sky.

The scherzo dances, light on nimble feet,
A fleeting joy, where shadows still retreat.
Then slow and grave, the adagio's plea,
A whispered prayer, beneath eternity.

In triumph's blaze, the final movement soars,
A symphony of victory, that evermore
Will echo on, where human spirit fires,
Beethoven's Fifth, a flame that ne'er expires.

Asked Bard: "Write a sonnet of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony"
Bard knows a sonnet hae 14 lines, whereas Gemini has
no idea of a sonnet, writing 16-lines & 20-lines "sonnets"

Fate's fist descends, a motif stark and grim,
Four notes that pierce the silence, cold and bold.
The strings reply, a whisper, then a climb,
A rising tide of doubt, a story told.

Woodwinds lament, the oboe's mournful plea,
Echoes in horns, a symphony of pain.
Yet strings resist, a yearning to be free,
And drums ignite a fire in the rain.

The battle rages, hope and fear entwined,
Crescendos crash, then hush to tender sighs.
Through darkness, flutes a fragile light have found,
And oboes sing of dawn in tearful eyes.

Transformed, the motif rises, bold and bright,
A hymn of victory, bathed in golden light.

Wednesday, December 13, 2023, 1:30-1:48 am; Asked Bard:
"Ask Gemini to write a sonnet of Beethoven's 5th Symphony"
Gemini wrote 20 lines instead of 14-lines Shakesperean sonnet
Gemini's version is no improvement on Bard's composition.

Four notes, a pulse, a question in the night,
A stark resolve against the hush it throws.
Beethoven's fist upon the canvas writes,
In tones of storm, a symphony that flows.

The strings ignite, a fury born of strife,
Fate's drumbeat echoing in every bar.
Through shadowed chords, the melody takes life,
A wounded cry that pierces near and far.

But darkness yields to whispers soft and low,
A oboe's sigh, a flute's celestial grace.
Hope dares to bloom where doubt had dared to grow,
And fleeting peace paints light upon the face.

Triumphant horns ascend on wings of fire,
The symphony resolves in soaring song.
From depths of sorrow, born on wings of pyre,
A hymn to man, where weakness makes him strong.

So let the music wash away the tears,
And raise the spirit, conquer every doubt.
For in this symphony, a message clears:
Even from darkness, hope can find its route.

The sad thing is, as I have become on a journey to becoming
a little more human, the country has been on a journey of becoming less human. And so we now live in bitter and divided times. There's just so much social pain. We just have to be really good at this skill of seeing others, making them feel valid, respected, heard & understood. I didn't know how to be with a depressed person. I recommended Jean-Jacques Rousseau's "Reveries of a Solitary Dreamer" ($11.91 at Amazon), which I've listed in "My Favorite Books" as it was recommended by the British
sage Paul Brunton during our walk in Vevey (9-1-1979). Quoted in "Enlightenment News": “Before instructing others, one should have inner enlightenment... The task I had set myself called for long and tranquil meditations... "Know Thyself" at the Delphi Temple was not such an easy precept to observe... I felt fused as it were with all beings and nature.”

of Christmas— Read Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" in wikipedia—

The actual Elizabethan festival of Twelfth Night would involve the antics of a Lord of Misrule, who before
leaving his temporary position of authority, would call
for entertainment, songs, and mummery; the play has been regarded as preserving this festive and traditional atmosphere of licensed disorder.  This leads to the general inversion
of the order of things, most notably gender roles.
