Stanford Bronze Plaque 68 is on the ground 68 yards to the right of Stanford University's Memorial Church. It is in front of the archway between Buildings 60 & 70. The plaque is dedicated to Class of 1968. As part of my compilations of Numbers project, web pages on "Number 68" were begun on July 26, 2018 for my friend Cathy's 68th birthday on August 5, 2019. Using "Number 67" as a template, the 200 entries in "Number 68" were completed on September 5. When Foothill College Krause Center was closed, took the Light Rail from Mountain View to the Sunnyvale Campus. Al Guzman introduced me to the Janitor Matt, who unlocked the Computer Labs for me. Al also requested Mike Almasi to install BBEdit and Adobe Photoshop for me to work. Best By Number: Who Wore What With Distinction (2006) enabled me to include five football players and a hockey player with uniform #68. From Jeremy Baker's Tolstoy's Bicycle book (1982), found famous people and their accomplishments at age 68 Giotto, Girolamo Fracastoro, William Henry Harrison, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Buckminster Fuller, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Lillian Carter. Delightful locating images for "68 in Collectibles, Coins & Postage Stamps", #111-121, including Marvel Comics stamp #68 of Son of Satan, #68 Topps cards from Wings, World on Wheels (1911 Oakland Roadster), Look 'n See (Sir Isaac Newton), & Scoop (Jet passes sound barrier). The only 68¢ U.S. stamp is a 1941 Wine Tax stamp. 68 denomination foreign stamps were found from Argentina, Canada (3), Cyprus (2), France (8), and Monaco (4). 2018 Scott Standard Postage Stamp Catalogues from Los Altos Library were consulted to locate these "68" stamps downloaded from the web using Google images. Sections "68 in Books on Bible, Philosophy & Religion" includes items #130-169 from my personal library searching for wisdom quotes from favorite philosophers, saints and sages. Section "68 in Poetry & Literature" includes items #170-199 from my favorite poets and writers, quoting from their poem 68, chapter 68, & page 68. These quotes inspired "Meditations on 68" poem (Notes). Passages on 68 from my spiritual mentors were typed from their books #166: Wei Wu Wei's Asked the Awakened, #167: Paul Brunton's Notebooks, Volume 16: Enlightened Mind, Divine Mind, #168: Subramuniya's Merging with Siva, #169: Seung Sahn's The Whole World Is A Single Flower Passages on 68 from poets who taught me include #192: Kenneth Koch, my freshman English Professor at Columbia (1959-60), #195: Robert Bly (Asilomar Retreats 1988-89, San Francisco Mythical Thinking Workshop 1988, Stanford 2008), #197: Kay Ryan (Stanford Workshops 2010). The final item #200 is Numerology: words whose letters add up to 68 Buddha Vigilance, Butterfly Wisdom, Dragon River, Face Reflection, Garden Fountain, Golden Spring, Life Marriage, Mirror Mind, Pilgrim Rock, Rose Sapphire, Star Lightning. May readers of "On Number 68" sail down the Dragon River and find the Garden Fountain with Golden Spring. With Buddha Vigilance, may they be illumined by Star Lightning, and awakened by Butterfly Wisdom. Peter Y. Chou Mountain View, October 19, 2019 |
