Dear Harold:

HAPPY 97th BIRTHDAY!

Woodblock Print #97
from 100 Views of Edo
"Five Pines, Onagi Canal" (1856)
by Ando Hiroshige
(1797-1858)
Research Notes:
Brooklyn Museum

Large pine tree in the foreground,
its overhanging branch carefully
supported by three posts, is lone
survivor of five pines originally
planted along the Onagi Canal.

Hiroshige's Woodblock #97
inspired this haiku:

    Giant pine overhead
    the waters as tourists
    enjoy the autumn breeze.

"Whose dwelling is the light of setting suns"
in Line 97 of Wordsworth's "Tintern Abbey":
To look on nature, not as in the hour
Of thoughtless youth; but hearing oftentimes
The still, sad music of humanity,
Nor harsh nor grating, though of ample power
To chasten and subdue. And I have felt
A presence that disturbs me with the joy
Of elevated thoughts; a sense sublime
Of something far more deeply interfused,
Whose dwelling is the light of setting suns,
And the round ocean and the living air,
And the blue sky, and in the mind of man;
A motion and a spirit, that impels
All thinking things, all objects of all thought,
And rolls through all things. Therefore am I still
A lover of the meadows and the woods,
And mountains; and of all that we behold
William Wordsworth (1770-1850),
    "Tintern Abbey" (1798), Lines 89-104

William Wordsworth
by Benjamin R. Haydon

The 97th Psalm is praise to God for his righteousness:

The LORD reigns; let the earth rejoice;
let the multitude of isles be glad thereof.
His lightnings enlightened the world:
    the earth saw, and trembled.
The hills melted like wax at the presence of the LORD,
at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.
The heavens declare his righteousness,
and all the people see his glory.
For thou, LORD, art high above all the earth:
thou art exalted far above all gods.
Light is sown for the righteous,
and gladness for the upright in heart.
Rejoice in the LORD, ye righteous;
and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.

Psalms 97.1, 4-6, 9, 11-12 (1023 BC),
    Chagall's "King David" (1085 BC-1015 BC)
on Israel #399 stamp (issued 9-24-1969)

  Happy 97th Birthday dear Harold—
May your 97th year be beautiful,
  fruitful, healthful, and wonderful!

  With joyous wishes,

  Peter
