The Heavenly Moment

Heaven is seeing
a blue circle of light
before falling asleep

Heaven is finding
Goethe & Albert Schweitzer
to be my heroes.

Heaven is getting
accepted by the college
of your first choice.

Heaven is baking
a jello cake with peaches
arranged as a flower.

Heaven is having
Martha Graham sign her program
inspiring me to dance.

Heaven is meeting
your first spiritual teacher
who enlightens you.

Heaven is writing
a poem with wonderful words
flowing right through you.

Heaven is drinking
from the wisdom of sages
in the Cornell stacks.

Heaven is feeling
like Galileo seeing
the moons of Jupiter.

Heaven is learning
Nature's language of life
predicting protein structures.

Heaven is getting
a letter from your girl friend
telling she loves you.

Heaven is having
Marcel Marceau sharing his
Zen moment in mime.

Heaven is seeing
a sage fourteen days in my
four trips to Europe.

Heaven is wild birds
flying to your hand eating
raisins and almonds.

Heaven is teaching
kids to have pride and joy
in writing poetry.

Heaven is saying
the magic word so Dalai Lama
turns to sign your book.

Heaven is meeting
a stranger that becomes
your intimate friend.

Heaven is dancing
the waltz around the ballroom
swirling like the stars.

Heaven is crashing
Pinsky's Poetry Workshop
and he lets me stay.

Heaven is being
calm and joyful finding
bliss is within you!

After writing the poem "Heaven is..." based on generalities,
I recalled many epiphanies in my life that may be called
"The Heavenly Moment" arranged here in chronological order.
