| Preface: On Thursday, January 30, 2014, 11:15 am, I was walking down Ortega Avenue in Mountain View. There were bare ginkgo trees on the left and bare plum trees on the right (Ginkgo with leaves). Then something caught my attention that inspired this haiku— "A row of bare trees / as I walk down the street— / Ah! a single plum blossom." As I was in a rush to catch the 11:36 am Bus #35 at Showers Drive to Foothill College in Palo Alto, I didn't have time to take a photo of this lone plum blossom. It was a little windy, and the last line of Shelley's 1819 poem "Ode to the West Wind" came to mind— "If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?" When I got to Middlefield Campus Computer Lab, a friend had sent me a haiku on January 29, 6:13 pm— "Daffodils are up. / Scent of flowers fills the air. / It feels like spring." This is synchronicity! On Monday, February 3, I walked down Ortega Ave to take a photograph of the lone plum blossom, but several more had bloomed. The force of Nature waits for no one. The photos below show in the span of six days (February 3 to 8), nearly bare trees proliferated to over a hundred plum blossoms. The fourth photo below shows a plum blossom with a cicada on its right, but it is actually a clump of leaves. I've honored the plum blossom in an earlier poem "How They Fall" (3-31-1992). |
