Bly was profiled in newspapers, magazines & a 90-minute

Bly, a best-selling author, antiwar activist and translator who introduced international poets to American audiences, died at home with most of his family by his side. His Iron John: A Book About Men (1990), became an international best-seller, but drew backlash from feminists.

Mountain View: "Bestselling Minnesota
author, poet Robert Bly dies at 94""

(By Laurie Hertzel, Star Tribune, MN, 11-22-2021)

In his heyday, Bly was known for making theater of poetry readings— reading poems twice, or three times, just because he loved their sound; reading other writers' work; wearing a rubber fright mask or an embroidered vest on stage; reading to the background music of drums and sitars. But despite his theatrics, he was always intensely serious about poetry and its importance in the cultural and political landscape. He was besotted by words. Last public reading was 4-13-2015, at Plymouth Congregational Church in Minneapolis where he launched the collection, Like the New Moon, I Will Live My Life. Read "Keeping Our Small Boat Afloat" about survival, grace, and death. In 2012, his daughter Mary [Eloisa James], a professor [Shakespeare professor at Fordham University] and author [Romance novels], talked to Minnesota Public Radio about Bly's fading memory. Bly's wife Ruth was watching a video of him— and he said 'I like that guy!'
And then he said 'I wish I knew him.'
Bly's poem "Keeping Our Small Boat Afloat"
So many blessings have been given to us
During the first distribution of light, that we are
Admired in a thousand galaxies for our grief.

Don't expect us to appreciate creation or to
Avoid mistakes. Each of us is a latecomer
To the earth, picking up wood for the fire.

Every night another beam of light slips out
From the oyster's closed eye. So don't give up hope
that the door of mercy may still be open.

Seth and Shem, tell me, are you still grieving
Over the spark of light that descended with no
Defender near into the Egypt of Mary's womb?

It's hard to grasp how much generosity
Is involved in letting us go on breathing,
When we contribute nothing valuable but our grief.

Each of us deserves to be forgiven, if only for
Our persistence in keeping our small boat afloat
When so many have gone down in the storm.

lungs, shoulder, collar, face, top of head, ceilng. Images: squash eggs between your toes, apply hot bacon to your
knees, slather mustard to your thighs, dip your buttocks
in tub of milk, inhale a banana into your lungs, smear
peanut butter on your shoulders, stuff lettuce into your
