Saturday, June 3, 2023, 9:00-9:30 pm Mountain View: "BUSINESS: AI makes mistakes but could it destroy us?" (By Larry Magid, Mercury News, June 2, 2023, C7-C8) Steven A. Schwartz, a veteran attorney, used ChatGPT for his legal research, which resulted in citations to cases that never existed. Schwartz later told the court that it was the first time he used ChatGPT and "therefore was unaware of the possibility that its content could be false." When it comes to generative AI, we need warning signs, traffic lights, traffic cops, driver's education and many other safeguards. AI can power incredible medical breakthroughs. But like other technologies, including fire, cars, kitchen knives & pharmaceuticals, it can also do harm if it misused. |
Saturday, June 3, 2023, 9:30-10:26 pm Mountain View: "TECHNOLOGY: What's new in robots? An AI-powered humanoid machine that writes poems" (By Kelvin Chang, AP, Mercury News, 5-31-2023) Ameca can speak French, Chinese or dozens of other languages, instantly compose a poem or sketch a cat on request. Ask for a smile, and you'll get a clenched grin on her rubbery blue face. Ameca uses AI image generator Stable Diffusion to draw & OpenAI's GPT-3 to come up with responses. When asked to compose a poem, it took a few seconds to come up with a few verses. Monday, June 5, 2023, 9:50-10:50 pm Mountain View: "COMMENTARY: What it looks like when jobs disappear in the shadow of AI" (By Brian Merchant, LA Times, Mercury News, June 5, 2023, C8) CNET quietly started publishing AI-written stories in November, BuzzFeed and Insider have announced that they're trying out different forms of AI-generated content too. At the same time, all three companies have also been experimenting with laying off their staff. CNET fired 10% of its newsroom in March, & Insider followed suit in April. BuzzFeed shut down its entire Pulitzer Prize-winning news division, which was home to 60 journalists, and laid off 15% of employees companywide. IBM CEO Arvind Krishna, estimated AI would replace around 8,000 of the firm's jobs in coming years. In the end, we're still getting more AI and fewer humans even if the AI is not doing the humans' job, exactly. There's no jobs apocalypse coming; there's just a series of managers making the calls they think will best benefit their bottom line, & serve their boards. Just like they're supposed to AI or no. |
Monday, June 5, 2023, 10:50-11:50 pm Mountain View: "8 Questions: Satya Nadella: The man who has helmed Microsft since 2014 talks AI, jobs, and the case for developing the new technology despite growing concerns" (By Alana Semuels, Time, June 12, 2023. p. 76). Q: What is one unintended consequence of AI that regulators should watch out for? A: Bias. One of the key things is to ensure that when you're using these technologies, that by some unintended way, biased outputs are not causing real-world harm. Q: What is going to change in the workplace with the adoption of AI? A: AI is moving from being auto-pilot to being a co-pilot that helps us at our work. You put the human in the center, and then create this tool around them that empowers them and takes the drudgery away from work. How much time do we spend just coordinating and how much time do we spend creating which is what gives us real joy. If we can tilt that balance toward more creativity, we will all be better off. (Video: Microsoft CEO Nadella on AI, 5-1-2023). |

Tuesday, June 6, 2023, 8:00-9:15 pm Mountain View: "Survival of the Fittest" (By Dan Hendrycks, Time, June 12, 2023. pp. 38-41) The evolutionary case that humanity is already on its way to giving up its own dominance. Selfishness doesn't require malice or even sentience. Whe an AI automates a task and leaves a human jobless, this is selfish behavior without any intent. If competive pressures continue to drive AI development, we shouldn't be surprised if they act selfishly too... Future of humanity is closely intertwined with progrssion of AI. There is a disturbing realization that natural selection may have more sway over it than we do. We're still in command. It's time to take this threat seriously. Once we hand over control, we won't get it back. |
Tuesday, June 6, 2023, 8:00-9:15 pm Mountain View: "Don't call it an arms race" (By Katja Grace, Time, June 12, 2023. p. 41) AI Machines can now write elegant prose & useful code, ace exams, conjure exquisite art, & predict how proteins will fold. Progress in AI could lead to creation of superhumanly- smart artificial "people" with goals conflicting with humanity's interests. Think of a species that's to homo sapiens what homo sapiens is to chimps. Many fear AI could mean humanity's end, some worry if researchers don't sprint forward, those less responsible will. Our future might be in the hands of one in China that doesn't try to avoid risks. |

So Are Their Caffeine Levels" (By Julie Creswell, NY Times, Mercury News, 6-10-2023, C7-C8) But the eye-popping cans pack a serious punch. A 12-ounce can of Prime Energy contains 200 mgs of caffeine. Saturday, June 24, 2023, 6:00-7:00 pm Mountain View: Time Magazine, July 3, 2023 issue came; "OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Is Pushing Past Doubts on Artificial Intelligence" (By Edward Felsenthal, Time, July 3, 2023. pp. 42-46) Altman's company, OpenAI, is only 7 years old. It has fewer than 500 employees. But in the span of 6 months, the company through its viral product ChatGPT has vaulted AI into public consciousness. Few doubt it's at the vanguard of a revolution that will, for better or worse & probably both, change the world. ChatGPT is almost certainly the most rapidly adopted product in the history of technology. In two months, ChatGPT had more than 100 million unique visitors. Instagram took 30 months to reach that level. "Look, if AGI goes wrong, no bunker's going to help anyone," he says, adding later: "the scary part is just sort of putting this lever into the world will for sure have unpredictable consequences." |
Saturday, June 24, 2023, 7:00-8:00 pm Mountain View: "Interview with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman" (By Edward Felsenthal, Time, June 21, 2023); Q: What will the interface look like as the technology integrates more deeply into our lives? A: You'll be able to do this with two-way voice, and it'll feel real time. To talk like two people doing conversations, & that'll be powerful. Imagine a world where, as you are talking, it's like the Star Trek holodeck. Q: What's coming in six months, a year? A: We'll get images & audio & video, & models will get smarter. But the thing that people are really going to be happy about is if you tried something 10,000 times & took the best one out of 10,000 responses, it's pretty good for most questions, but not all the other ones. GPT-4 has knowledge most of the time, but you don't always get its best answer. How can we get you the best answer all the time, almost all the time? If we can figure that out, and that's like an open research nut to crack, that'll be a big deal. |

As era of interstate highway driving dawned, Route 66 began to reflect a yearning for a time when a journey was about more than the destination. Now 8 states traversed by America's defining highway are getting it ready for its 100th anniversary, in 2026. Iconic highway has always been "the ultimate symbol of a restless nation on the move," writes Michael Wallis in "Route 66: The Mother Road", his 1990 book. |

Monday, June 26, 2023, 6:30-6:58 pm Mountain View: "HEALTH CARE: Doctors Are Using Chatbots In An Unexpected Way" (By Gina Kolata, NY Times, Mercury News, 6-26-2023, C7-C8) Artificial intelligence offered a perhaps too tempting shortcut to finding diagnoses & medical information that may be incorrect or even fabricated, a frightening prospect in a field like medicine. Doctors asked ChatGPT to help them communicate with patients in a more compassionate way. Dr. Gregory Moore, who specialized in diagnostic radiology and neurology when he was a practicing physician, was stunned. "I wish I would have had this when I was in training," he said. "I have never seen or had a coach like this." He became an evangelist, telling his doctor friends what had occurred. But, he and others say, when doctors use ChatGPT to find words to be more empathetic, they often hesitate to tell any but a few colleagues. |

Tuesday, June 27, 2023, 2:30-3:36 pm Mountain View: Karen's 6/27 email @ 7:13 am asked "What does that mean. You are more a Taoist than a Buddhist?" My web page on Enlightenment shows both Lao Tzu (Taoism) and Buddha (Buddhism). I've benefitted from teachings of both sages. Buddhism has more rules and rituals: 4 Noble Truths & 8-Fold Paths, burning incense, where Taoists enjoy roaming more in nature, teaching about Emptiness, Uncarved Block, Spirit of the Valley, the Babe, & Feminism. You'll see on top of my Enlightenment page is portrait of Chou Tun-Yi (1017-1073), founder of Neo-Confucianism whom I admire even more than Taoism. The Neo-Confucianists would say "We're not like the Buddhists talking about the afterlife & reincarnation, or the Taoists seeking elixirs to prolong life, we want to enjoy life here & now!" It's important whichever path you follow, stick to it, as they all will lead you to the mountaintop to enjoy 360-degrees vision. It's like digging for water, too many shallow holes will not yield ground water as in a steep well. Neo-Confucian Sages: Han-Yu, Ch'eng Hao, Ch'eng I, Lu Hsiang-shan, Chu Hsi, Wang Yang Ming. |
Tuesday, June 27, 2023, 2:50-4:35 pm Mountain View: Cavada's 4-26-2023 lesson Import text from Rumi in Google Slides; I chose David Romtvedt's poem "Sunday Morning Early" My daughter and I paddle red kayaks across the lake. Pulling hard, we slip easily through the water. Far from either shore, it hits me that my daughter is a young woman and suddenly everything is a metaphor for how short a time we are granted: the red boats on the blue-black water, the russet and gold of late summer's grasses, the empty sky. We stop and listen to the stillness. I say, "It's Sunday, and here we are in the church of the out of doors", then wish I'd kept quiet. That's the trick in life learning to leave well enough alone. Our boats drift to where the chirring of grasshoppers reaches us from the rocky hills. A clap of thunder. I want to say something truer than I love you. I want my daughter to know that, through her, I live a life that was closed to me. I paddle up, lean out, and touch her hand. I start to speak then stop. |
