Claude Monet (1840-1926), Waterlilies (1906)
Museum Marmottan, Paris

WATERLILIES I

O waterlilies of Monet—
Majestic colors they display
Like Fra Angelico's lucid blue
Showing the beautiful and the true.
Gathering here is the angelic choir
Praising the glories of the Higher.
Budding lotus from the muddy ground
Drinking golden nectar from the pond
Purified by water's crystalline flow
Nurtured by the sun's eternal glow
Swimming on the surface of the lake
Communing with the air as they wake
Unfolding the story of you and me
The soul's pilgrimage to be free.
