Selected Poems 2023 Wrote 55 poems this year. The first poem "Sonnet: She's Someone Special" (12-23-2022) honored Queen Elizabeth II after seeing all those magazines at Safeway's checkout aisle. When KDFC 104.9 FM played Christmas music non-stop on Dec. 24-25, I rounded up my favorite tunes and wrote this poem "Christmas Carols" (12-24-2022) with links to Bing Crosby's "White Chritmas", Frank Sinatra's "Ave Maria", and Harry Belafonte's "Scarlet Ribbons". "Moose Lost Its Antlers" (12-24-2022) was written after watching an Alaskan couple's door's camera caught this miracle of nature. The sonnet "Most Famous Reindeer of Them All" (12-25-2022) was written for my friend Rudy, who claims his name is the most famous reindeer of them all. It was fun finding 14 images for this poem "Mythical Creatures" (12-30-2022). May you not encounter the Chupacabra, Jersey Devil, Yeti, or Bigfoot that could cause you harm. "New Year 2023 Haikus" (1-1-2023) compared my composition with AI generated by ChatGPT and Ai Haikus Generator. The latter could not write haikus for two words. Ai Haikus Generator: "New" gave "A new beginning / a new year for a new start / a new day, new life." This sonnet "Rod to Destroy the World" (1-1-2023) honors Allan Bennett (aka Ananda Metteyya). Paul Brunton told me (9-2-1979) his first spiritual mentor had invented a rod that would destroy the world. Suggested I look into this subject, studying magic wands in fairy tales. This sonnet "Fluffy Cumulus Clouds" (1-16-2023) was written after my friend Karen sent me photo of cumulus clouds she had taken in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Don't know how Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs creeped into this poem. The poem "Map the Gap" (2-2-2023) with 17 images explores the gap in the material & spiritual worlds. Swami Chinmayananda told students "Find the gap between thoughts to be enlightened!" The poem "Map the Gap (Part 2)" (2-8-2023) with 25 images continues exploration of the gap in the material & spiritual worlds. Without gaps between words, it's hard to read books. "Meditations on 46: Open Your Heart" & Notes were written for my niece Elisa's 46th birthday. (2-27-2023). Writer's words appeared in verse 46, sonnet 46, chapter 46, line 46, or page 46. None of these words are mine. I merely arranged other's compositions into this poem. This poem "March Fourth Sonnet" (3-4-2023) was written because the date "March Fourth" urged me to march forth.
"10th Birthday Poem"
(3-5-2023) was written for my grandniece Lilly's 10th birthday. Found "Alligator Tears Through Metal Fence" (3-7-2023) poem was written after seeing this video. "Lion & Elephant at the Well" (3-9-2023) shows the elephant be ranked as "King of th Beasts". "Names for My Children" poem (3-27-2023) with 15 images shows my dream of fatherhood with names for my children Shankara for my son & Emmelia for my daughter. "What Is Easter?" poem (4-4-1977) was witten 46 years ago, and brought back again. "GOD IS NOWHERE" poem (5-24-2023) was written after finding a photo of someone sleeping on a desk, and composed this image in Adobe Photoshop. "16th Birthday Poem" (6-3-2023) written for my grandniece Sophia. 14 quatrains & 30 images. "Six Words Short Story" poem (6-8-2023). Hemingway wrote "For Sale Baby Shoes. Never worn." Eavan Boland challenged Stanford poets in our class to write six words poem. Made 14 versions to imitate Hemingway.
"Joy in Abundance" poem
(6-9-2023) was inspired by my sister Margaret buying a birthday cake "Beatitude" poem (7-28-1988) was written 35 years ago in Taiwan when visiting Tainan's School for the Deaf. The girl greeting us looked like an angel that touched me deeply. "How I Won Myself a Taiwanese Wife" poem (7-29-1988) is a fictionized account when the National Development Delegates visited a Taichung TV Studio taping "The Bachelorettes".
"Meditations on 72: In the Infinite" poem
& Notes
(8-8-2023) were written for my friend Cathy's 72nd birthday.
Writer's words appeared in verse 72, sonnet 72, chapter 72, line 72, or page 72. "Movie Stars Missed by Madonna" poem (8-15-2023) was written after I realized Madonna missed these 30 movie stars in her song "Vogue".
"Skeletal Museum" poem
(9-4-2023) was written while hunting for hidden objects in "The Lubitsch Touch" poem (9-18-2023) was written while thinking of those moments in movies that surprise the aduience to laughter and applause. Six examples given. "19 Wild Turkeys Skyline Ridge" poem (9-21-2023) was written after Ann told me of seeing 19 wild turkeys while hiking at Skyline Ridge on September 16, and her brother had 4 turkeys visiting his house in Maui on the same day! Synchronicity! "Autumn Equinox 2023" poem (9-23-2023) was written to celebrate the balance of darkness & light Yin & Yang. Noted famous people born on this day, September 23, and songs of Autumn. "Light on the Hill" poem (9-27-2023) was written after finding Nithin's sketch (9-3-2003) of sunlight at night at Mt. Arunachala in South India, home of Ramana Maharshi. Nithin's 9/3/2003 email @ 3:30 am arrived at exactly the same time as John Smart, CEO of Stanford's Singularity Conference. Refused John's offer of $150 Student discount fee. I realized that spirituality is more important than singularity. It got me into the Conference for free (2003-2005). "October" poem (10-1-2023) was written with 20 images honoring the Harvest Moon & Hunter's Moon, Oktoberfest drinking & dancing, October birthstone & flower Opal & Marigold, pumpkin weighing at Half-Moon Bay, and children out "trick or treats" on Halloween. The Wildlife Photos 2023 Contest inspired me to write "Three Penguins Dancing" (10-9-2023) "We're not dancing cheek-to-cheek / but the Syrtos as in Zobra the Greek." Another favorite from Wildlife Photos 2023 Contest is Bird: "They Went That Way!" (10-10-2023) "Mack the Knife Is Back in Town" poem (10-13-2023) was written after Bobby Darin singing "Mack the Knife" (1970) in my Favorite Songs Collection. Rare negative poem on serrial killers. "Moonrise & Sunset" poem (10-14-2023) was inspired by Ann's photo of "Shanghai Sunset" (2013) compared to Ansel Adam's "Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico" (1941). Nice to see these heavenly orbs side by side Nature's feast for our eyes. "Halloween Haikus 2023" poem (10-31-2023) was written comparing my composition to Ai Haikus Generator & ChatGPT. AI generated poems had too many repeats without fresh ideas. This video of "Puppy & Duckling" is indeed heartwarming. It inspired this poem (11-2-2023) "Duckling cozies up / closely to her pup. // If we behave like this, / there'll be world peace." "Circles: Space & Time" poem (11-4-2023) "Eye is the first circle / from which flows miracles / of this world's spectacles. // Two feasts for our eyes / Sun in the day, Moon at night, / orbs shining in the skies." "More Circular Things" poem (11-5-2023) "Olives & cucumbers sliced / dinner with a bowl of rice. // Wedding ring on your finger / May your love last and linger. // Circular is the letter "O" / playing game Tic-Tac-Toe." "More Circular Things-2" poem (11-6-2023) "Are crop circles made by UFOs? / Count tree rings as they grow. // Drop a pebble in a lake / water ripples you will make. // Kolo dance from Serbia flying high / with dessert of a tasty apple pie!" "More Circular Things-3" (11-7-2023) "Round Madonna Raphael paintings in Rome / artworks prized more than "Geodesic Dome". // Oranges are good fruits to eat / with cantaloupe as extra treat. // A sunflower brightens our day / while daisies make a nice bouquet." "More Circular Things-4" (11-9-2023) "Crystal Ball will tell your future ahead / playing roulette, put your money on red. // Nice to see Slinky bounce down the stairs / Are raindrops & tear drops heavenly pairs? // Fetch frisbee game dogs love to play / "Earthrise" photo takes our breath away!" "Polar Bear Dreaming" poem (11-12-2023) of 7 rhyming couplets "Polar Bear sleeping on a block of ice / Is she dreaming of something nice? // Living north in the Arctic cold / everywhere is white to behold. // Beach Boys sing California Dreamin' / Polar Bear ice skating and dancing!" "Health People Pursuits Places" poem (11-14-2023) was written after Gene Tognetti showed in his LINC-405 class this theme found at a retirement center. "Health is more important than wealth always / much like warmth & light of the sunshine rays. // Music, art, poetry, are lovely pursuits / to nourish your spirit like ripened fruits. // No need to live in a special place / everywhere the sage is blessed with grace." "This Is the Sage" poem (11-18-2023) was written inspired by my meetings with the British sage Paul Brunton in Switzerland "Sincerity is the foundation of the sage / whose mind is fresh & young without age. // With wings— compassion & wisdom / everywhere he goes is his kingdom. // No one is so generous and kind / The sage is best treasure you will find."
"This Is the Sage-3" poem
(11-20-2023) compared my composition with those generated by AI
ChatGPT & Google Bard. ChatGPT didn't provide an image, to which I added
Shankara, not knowing he's wearing pearls mentioned in the poem. Google Bard sent
photo of the herb sage, before I prompted
"wise sage". Bard's photo of "Dalai Lama" was erroneous.
While it took me "Jumble Puzzle Budapest" poem (11-21-2023) was inspired by the Jumble Puzzle (11-21-2023) with the words "Pepper", "Weary", "Growl, "Crunch" triggering "Pepper weary growl & crunch / as "Hungary" people sit and munch. // Jack Mullen was teary and cried / when his pet dog Pepper died. / Each morning, working on Jumble / as I fumble, stumble, & tumble." "Thanksgiving 2023" poem (11-23-2023) 8 rhyming couplets on things to thank for "Thanks for music soothing my soul, / thanks to poetry making me whole. // Thanks to art, a feast for my eyes, / thanks to Nature, its oceans & skies. // Thanks to miracles of each new day, / thanks to joy in my work and play."
"Music Art Poetry: Ascension" poem
(11-27-2023) was inspired by synchronicity. My first date at Cornell 60 years ago, Frances McKenzie
was thinking of me when receiving my "Thanksgiving" poem. She's living in New Mexico and tells me
to listen to "Songs of Ascent". Meanwhile Gordon Hunt is playing Zipoli's "Ascension" on KDFC radio.
I received 11/26 email from Denise with "Photographs to Wow Us" poem (12-1-2023) A photograph of "Man Embracing a Hawk" led me to scan through 227 images "to make you look twice". Selected just three "UFO Cloud" (Lenticular Cloud), "Moon as Rock Eye", and "Smiling Face in the Sky" made by three flying birds. "Enlightenment-3" poem (12-3-2023) Comparing my composition of 4 rhyming quatrains to those generated by AI ChatGPT & Google Bard. ChatGPT had no images; Google Bard had photo of a lotus blossom evoking the feeling of enlightenment. I chose the image of Buddha under the Bodhi Tree with the morning star (Venus) greeting him when he was awakened.
"Beethoven's Fifth Sonnet"
(12-12-2023) "Allegro con brio opens our mind /
like no other work of nature or art. /
There is no greater treasure we'll find /
that is more noble & true in our heart. //
Those four notes dun dun dun DUN! /
Wake up! Wake up! Life has begun!"
"Beethoven's Fifth Sonnet-3"
(12-14-2023) Compares my version to those generated by AI "Rambling Thoughts on Napoleon" (12-16-2023) is a prose poem written after Al Guzman, Rudy, and I saw the 3-hour movie "Napoleon" directed by Ridley Scott and staring Joaquin Phoenix at Shoreline Century Cinema 16 (12-9-2023, 10:05 am-1:00 pm).
