Roman Holiday (1953) |
Stanford University has free film screenings at Cubberley Auditorium that is open to the public. During the 2006 spring semester, I attended Prof. Scott Bukatman's class on "Studies in Authorship: The Films of Vincente Minnelli". Prof. Bukatman had many Minnelli articles on reserve at the Art Library as reading assignments. He also showed many of the film highlights in class for discussion. But he wanted the class to view the entire film at the Stanford Theatre, saying that one needs to be immersed in a Minnelli film on the wide screen instead of watching it on TV or DVD. I got to see 24 Minnelli films during the semester, and appreciate his auteurship and artistry as a director more than ever. As a bonus, I was introduced to many of the Ronald Coleman silent films shown at the Stanford Theatre at the same time. Now, Ronald Coleman is one of my favorite actors. I've made web links on these films at IMDB (Internet Movie Database) for my reference. In addition to the complete cast listing, there are plot outlines, photo gallery, reader's comments, trivia, and goofs that will add to your enjoyment of these classic films. During Summer 2006, Stanford Theatre is showing the early Judy Garland films (1936-1943). It is such a delight seeing the young Judy snappy her fingers, tapping her feet, and singing, as she blossoms to become a great entertainer. |
