Preface: For Song #36, I've selected "Goodnight Sweetheart"
sang by Rudy Vallée (1942).
(Lyrics).
"Goodnight, Sweetheart" was written in 1931 by the song-writing team of Ray Noble,
Jimmy Campbell and Reg Connelly.
It was recorded in 1931 by the Wayne King Orchestra (vocals by Ernie Birchill),
Russ Columbo, Bing Crosby, Ruth Etting and the Ray Noble Orchestra (vocals by Al Bowlly).
Guy Lombardo also recorded his own version of the song in 1931 with vocals by
Carmen Lombardo.
Lombardo's version remained at No. 1 for a number of weeks in the U.S. charts.
In film, the song was performed in Angel's Holiday with Jane Withers (1937),
and The Palm Beach Story (1942; performed by Rudy Vallée). I enjoyed
watching latter film at Stanford Theatre (7-22-2000) & dancing to this tune at Columbia University (1963). |
Good night, sweetheart, till we meet tomorrow Good night, sweetheart, sleep will banish sorrow Tears and parting may make us forlorn But with the dawn, a new day is born So I'll say good night, sweetheart, though I'm not beside you Good night, sweetheart, still me love will guide you Dreams enfold you in each one I'll hold you Good night, sweetheart, good night © Peter Y.
