Preface:
Two weeks ago, I picked up a flyer at Mountain View Senior Center on Sean Sutherland
playing Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Piano Concerto #21, 2nd & 3rd movements. This
is one of my favorite piece of music. I have a 1963
RCA vinyl record of Artur Rubinstein
playing Mozart's Concertos #21 & #23, that was listened to often. When the 1967 Swedish film
Elvira Madigan
used the 2nd movement as their theme, this music became even more popular. I told a friend about
this event since she enjoyed Jon Nakamatsu conversation & playing
at the Los Altos Library on April 18, 2017. However when she phoned the Mountain View Senior Center,
nobody knew about this concert. I checked the
July 2017 Prime Time News,
and it was not listed in their events and calendar. Finally, I phoned and was told the concert is on and will
be held in the Multi-Purpose Room A. My friend and I arrived at 2:45 pm, and got seats in the second row,
so we could observe the pianist's hands playing. The orchestra took up 2/3 of the room's space, with four
rows of chairs squeezed in 1/3 of the room. I counted some 60 seated, with a dozen standing against the wall.
The program listed five selections before Sutherland's playing, and three selections afterwards.
Sutherland was born in St. Vincent in the Caribbean,
receiving a B.S. & M.S. in Engineering at MIT
(Guardian, 5-27-2011).
He's studying now at Stanford Graduate School of Education
(Class of 2017), with a project on
Kandodis.
He was a Semi-Finalist in the Van Cliburn 2016 Amateur Competition
(YouTube: Preliminary Round,
Quarterfinal Round,
Semifinal Round).
I've linked all the music played today by the South Bay Community Orchestra from Wikipedia and YouTube below.
YouTube performances listing conductors and performers were selected instead of postings
